ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER
Intercollegiate Athletics
$2,772-$4,658/Month

Notes: This is a full-time, contract (10 month) position. Schedule of hours is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours. Travel, and travel outside of normal business hours will be required. The budgeted monthly salary for this position is $3,000.

Essential Functions: Serve as the Assistant Athletic Trainer to UC Riverside’s men's & women's athletic programs. This position will assist in the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for approx. 275 student-athletes competing in 17 Division I sports.

The assistant trainer will initiate and determine the nature, scope, and/or extent of the injury of illness of student-athletes; initiate medical care of athletic illness and injury, and provide treatment of athletic injuries using therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative/exercise equipment.

Assist coaches in the selection of appropriate protective equipment and advise coaches and athletes on specific health situations. Assist Head Trainer with training room operations. Maintain updated files and accurate medical records of the following: athletic injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs, schedules, and other necessary data.

This position will be responsible for daily control of infection and sanitation of the training room by cleaning and disinfecting all equipment, floors, and tables. Maintain an effective inventory control system for all supplies and equipment. Follow OSHA guidelines for bio-hazardous waste disposal. Assist in the development of an instruction based learning program for student interns/assistants/volunteers. Assist with the relationship between Student Health Services (SHS), team physicians and the Dept. of Intercollegiate Athletic Training Room; coordinate clinical and physician appointments between athlete and SHS or outside referral. Provide a referral system for counseling and guidance services to all athletes for medical and non-medical problems. Assist the training staff in administering the training room policies and procedures described by the Athletic Department and the university, and maintain compliance with NCAA, Big West Conference, University and department rules and regulations.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in related field required, plus previous experience working as an athletic trainer with sports teams, preferably at a university level.
• NATABOC and First Aid/CPR certification required, or obtained within first month of employment.
• Experience evaluating injuries, providing emergency care, providing preventative care through taping, bracing, massaging, and use of various modalities.
• Diversified sport coverage experience.
• Skill in determining when additional medical services are warranted.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
• Successful experience making presentations in both large and small group situations.
• Skill is giving clear instruction to others.
• Skill in successfully working in a fast paced, multi-task environment.
• Knowledge of ligament and muscle testing.
• Knowledge of various medical insurance policies and referral procedures.
• Familiarity with athletic training technology and its use in clinical settings.
• Ability to travel with teams to competition sites.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends and some holidays.
• Must be able to work within structure and philosophy of UCR and the Big West Conference.
• Demonstrated commitment to compliance with NCAA, Big West Conference, University and department rules and regulations.
• Hired applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License; must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in a related field.
• Experience working as an athletic trainer with sport teams at a university level.
