ASST. DIRECTOR - UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
Office of TRIO Programs
$3,679-$6,182/Month

Notes: This is a full-time, career position. Schedule of hours is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Overtime, travel, travel outside of normal business hours may be required. Special requirements: Overnight duty twice a week during residential portion of the 6-week Summer Program; night duty during overnight trips. The budgeted monthly starting salary range for this position is $3,679 - $4,513.

Essential Functions: The Assistant Director is responsible for the management and implementation of all aspects of the Upward Bound Oasis Federal Grant Program. This position will provide complex pre-college services to more than 50+ students and their parents at two high schools (Banning and Beaumont).

Responsibilities include conceptualization, development and implementation of program services described in grant objectives. Counseling, supervision and instruction to high school student participants to help them develop academic skills which enable them to qualify and successfully graduate from a 4-year university. Serve as primary contact for the Upward Bound (Oasis) Federal Grant Program and a UC Riverside representative for each high school that is served by Upward Bound. The Assistant Director will serve as the primary resource person for high school personnel on matters related to student’s preparation.

This position works collaboratively with other grant programs in the Office of TRIO Programs as well as develops relationships with other campus offices such as: the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP), UCR Office of Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, Undergraduate Recruitment, Career Center, Learning Center, and others. Recruits, selects, trains and supervises student employees (assistants, tutors and resident advisors).

Responsible for the collection of information and tracking of program services provided to participants for the annual performance report. Assist the director in making decisions regarding allocations of monies for implementation of grant objectives. In the absence of the TRIO office director, the Assistant Director, along with the office manager and other assistant directors helps out with the oversight of the operation of the Office of TRIO Programs.

Minimum Requirements:
• Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Experience in supervising student staff.
• Proficiency and skill in the use of personal computer, including proficiency with use of Windows operating system software programs, i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher and internet browsers.
• Excellent planning and coordinating skills in implementing educational programs to motivate economically disadvantaged high school students.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as interpersonal and motivational skills.
• Knowledge of the four segments of higher education and their admission requirements and application process.
• Knowledge of academic diagnostic testing, including PSAT, SAT, and ACT testing programs.
• General knowledge and experience in budget forecasting and maintaining cost effectiveness to implement grant budget.
• Knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs and application process.
• Ability to understand the needs of academically and economically disadvantaged students, and establish and maintain effective, trusting and professional relationships.
• Ability to speak to small and large groups of students, parents, and school personnel.
• Ability and experience in working with high school personnel.
• Ability to evaluate academic documents, including high school transcripts, state testing scores, progress reports and academic skill assessments.
• Ability to advise high school students and their parents on college and career opportunities.
• Ability to make professional development presentations to other TRIO personnel.
• Available and able to work evenings, weekends and attend overnight trips.
• Hired applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License; and must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in related area.
• Past experience working with TRIO programs.
• Experience in working with or having an understanding of low-income and/or first-generation college students and their families.
• Bilingual in Spanish.
