Responsibilities
As a supervisor in the Resource Management Department, the Assistant Head is responsible for acquisition of all materials for the University Libraries with special emphasis on electronic resources licensing, access, and maintenance. The Assistant Head is responsible for hiring, training and evaluating staff, for managing the priorities and day-to-day activities of the E-Resource Management unit, and for ensuring that the unit runs efficiently and smoothly. Provides back-up to the Accounts Supervisor in managing and overseeing fund-accounting activity. Interacts regularly with a range of the Library's materials vendors, including publishers, to solve problems, and participates in the evaluation of vendors and their performance. Works closely with and is knowledgeable in the relevant systems used in the Department, tests new software, and undertakes related problem-solving, in collaboration with other library staff, including the Systems Department. In collaboration with other supervisors in the Department, plays a significant role in integrating the activities of the Department with those of the Scholarly Resources Division as a whole to ensure the achievement of Divisional goals. The Assistant Head also has to develop and maintain a broad and deep understanding of acquisitions, electronic resource management and related technical services best practices.
Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science required; additional advanced degree desirable.
At least 3 years demonstrated successful experience in increasingly responsible positions managing or supervising acquisitions, serials, license negotiation, electronic resource management in academic or research libraries required.
Demonstrated knowledge of established and emerging national and international standards relating to acquisitions, serials, electronic resource management, and resource licensing and copyright. Some experience with cooperative programs, consortial initiatives, and operational workflow analyses desirable.
Knowledge of trends and issues in academic libraries, scholarly communications, higher education, publishing, preservation, and emerging technologies.
Excellent planning, analytical, interpersonal, communication, supervisory, project management and organizational skills.
Ability to work internally and externally with a wide variety of individuals at all levels, a strong service orientation, and a demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace.
