Parsons The New School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks applicants for a renewable term faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor within the School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT).

The position is focused on the history, theory and criticism of design relative to the built or made environment with an emphasis on issues such as ecological and social sustainability, design ethics, and design activism. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to link analytical study of these areas with critical practice. The ADHT School is looking for candidates who are forward-thinking about approaches and methodologies appropriate to address complex 21st century global urban conditions, are innovative in their pedagogical approaches to activating students' interest in the relationship between theory and practice, and can demonstrate an ability to teach/mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate level from a variety of disciplines across Parsons and The New School. A Ph.D. or equivalence in a relevant area, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship are required. Established record of publications is preferred.

The locus of this teaching position will be in the School of Art and Design History and Theory, which offers courses to undergraduate and graduate students across Parsons, and to students in other divisions of The New School. It also offers two of its own graduate degrees:

- MA in History of Decorative Arts and Design (in collaboration with the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum)

- MA in Fashion Studies (beginning Fall 2010)

This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.

Teaching Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor is expected to teach 5 courses per year, to both graduate and undergraduate students, hold regular office hours for students and colleagues, and participate in other classroom and extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, juries, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, internship supervision, program citizenship, Parsons/New School committees, etc.)

Creative Practice and Research:
Faculty are expected to continue to participate actively and with distinction in research and scholarly work.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate should have:

- A PhD or equivalence in the history and theory of the built environment with demonstrable evidence of professional, academic and/or pedagogic work on socially responsible/sustainable approaches to design.

- Knowledge of the current scholarship in environmental and urban studies.

- An understanding of the implications of design practice in relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces, (an engagement with the contemporary art/design of Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America and/or African Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans is highly desirable).

- Teaching experience at university level of 1-3 years, coupled with a proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities.

- Interest in developing serious critical, historical, and theoretical discussions around urban design practices.

- Interest in co-teaching "critical studio" courses that may be developed in collaboration with art and design practitioners.

- An interest in working collaboratively within Parsons, the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.

- Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.

- Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:
Engagement with the contemporary art/design of Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America and/or African Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans is highly desirable
