College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environment Sciences (ACES)

The College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time Associate Dean for Advancement to provide leadership for the development, alumni, communications, and outreach initiatives for the College of ACES. The College of ACES is proud of its exceptional faculty and student body and maintains a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, research and public service.

The College of ACES includes seven academic departments and is widely recognized for its commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate programs, teaching, research, outreach and international programs. The College also serves the state of Illinois via more than 100 University of Illinois Extension offices. The College plays a key role in national and international research initiatives in biological, physical, social, and economic sciences. The scope of the College has broadened dramatically since its founding in 1867, while its purpose remains focused on advancing scientific knowledge that makes life better, healthier, safer, and more profitable for people in Illinois and around the globe. The College has 225 tenure system faculty members and offers approximately 40 majors and concentrations to more than 2300 undergraduates. The graduate programs of the College attract more than 500 students each year. Annual expenditures of the College from all sources are more than $175 million.

Organizational Relationship

The Associate Dean for Advancement reports to the Dean of the College of ACES and to the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement/Senior Vice President of the University of Illinois Foundation. The Associate Dean provides strategic leadership for a team of twelve professional staff, four support staff, and several undergraduate student interns.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Serves as the primary liaison with university and campus administrators, including the Office of Institutional Advancement, the University of Illinois Foundation, the University of Illinois Alumni Association, the Office of Public Engagement and the Office of Public Affairs.
• Plans and implements a comprehensive development strategy for the College, its seven departments, one division and several specialized Centers. In addition, plans comprehensive development strategies for Illinois 4-H, and other specific University of Illinois Extension programs. This includes identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donors; coordinating and writing funding proposals directed at individuals, corporations, and foundations; designing and implementing campaigns for specific needs within the College and its units; directing the annual fund program, and conducting a significant stewardship program.
• Provides oversight and leadership for all College special events held to support the three prong mission of the College. This requires the Assistant/Associate Dean to maintain a significant travel schedule throughout the United States and occasionally internationally to meet with alumni, stakeholders, corporate and foundation executives.
• Provides oversight to staff with responsibilities in the areas of major gifts, annual funds, communications, marketing, special events, alumni relations, and 4-H and specific Extension fundraising.
• Establishes effective working relationships with academic department heads, center directors, faculty and administrators throughout the College of ACES, in order to thoroughly understand their programs and priorities and to assist them in managing their respective advancement activities. Works closely with Associate Dean of Research to assist in securing private support for regional research field stations as well as coordinating funding for University Arboretum.
• Establishes effective working relationships with the College’s students and student groups with direct responsibility for the Student Advancement Committee to engage them in the advancement process.
• Serves an ex-officio member of the ACES Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Illinois 4-H Foundation Board. In this capacity, meets regularly with Board and provides overall direction to Boards. Actively participates in all corresponding events and activities.
• Serves on the College’s Administrative Committee, Dean’s Committee and is an ex-officio member of the ACES Advancement Policy Committee.

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree preferred.
• An understanding and commitment to the land grant mission of the University of Illinois and the College of ACES.
• At least five years of successful experience in advancement, preferably in a higher education environment. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated an ability to build successful long-term relationships in a professional work environment.
• Experience in a position that requires extensive travel.
• Experience in managing professionals in multiple locations, both on and off campus as well as overall supervisory responsibilities of an office/department.
