Parsons The New School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks a tenure-track Associate Professor of Product Design and Director of the BFA in Product Design, within the School of Constructed Environments (SCE).
The Associate Professor/Director will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Product Design program. The Director of the Product Design program is a rotating role in SCE. At the end of this 50%-administrative assignment, the Associate Professor will assume full-time teaching and service responsibilities. Reporting to the Dean of SCE, the Director will provide academic oversight over curriculum development and instruction and will play a key role in guiding and implementing SCE's academic strategic planning agenda. In collaboration with other SCE program directors, the Director will help to create an integrated academic vision for SCE, including developing the MFA in Product Design and other new programs. This position provides a significant opportunity to play a leadership role in shaping vibrant new and established programs in product design and related genres and to confirm Parsons' international position as a leading school for graduate and undergraduate education in product design. The Director will function as an academic leader within Parsons, and will be encouraged to develop collaborative ventures across the five schools as well as with other university divisions at The New School.
Additionally, the Associate Professor will:
• Work with SCE leadership to define and implement the Product Design program's mission across the curriculum.
• Coordinate the undergraduate product design program.
• Develop and implement new curricula, including graduate programs (MFA) in product design.
• Staff the product design program with highly-qualified faculty.
• Facilitate and enhance connections with other disciplines within SCE, Parsons and the university.
• Interacting with the public and Product Design communities to promote the program's international presence.
Applicants should demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory of product design while also being able to teach students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons. Candidates must be innovative in their pedagogical approaches to activating students' interest in the relationship between theory to practice, and be forward-thinking about what skills/proficiencies are now required to adeptly respond to complex 21st century global conditions. The successful candidate will have a terminal degree or equivalent professional standing/experience; a record of strength in teaching, research, and scholarship; and a record of professional accomplishments.
The locus of this teaching position will be in the School of Constructed Environments, whose full- and part-time faculty are engaged academically while remaining active in their professional fields of practice. SCE offers the following degrees and programs (and is developing new graduate programs):
Architectural Design BFA, Architecture MArch, Interior Design BFA, Interior Design AAS, Interior Design MFA, Lighting Design MFA, Product Design BFA.

This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.
Teaching Responsibilities:
The Associate Professor is expected to teach both graduate and undergraduate students, hold regular office hours for students and colleagues, and participate in other classroom and extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, juries, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, internship supervision, program citizenship, etc.).
Creative Practice and Research:
Faculty are expected to participate actively and with distinction in professional, creative or scholarly work.
The ideal candidate should have:
• A terminal degree or demonstrated equivalence in product design
• Significant experience and/or academic research in the field of product design
• At least three years experience in academic administration, including curriculum development
• A commitment to the application of socially-responsible methods and ethical practices in design
• An understanding of the implications of design and fine arts practice in relation to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces (an engagement with the contemporary art/design of Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America and/or African Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans is highly desirable)
• At least three years of teaching experience, preferably in courses that include a combination of studios, seminars and tutorials, coupled with a proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities
• Interest in developing serious critical, historical, and theoretical discussions around product design in the classroom/studio
• Ability to develop and nurture individual student's design abilities and a strong commitment to progressive design education
• Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
• Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively
• An interest in working collaboratively within Parsons, the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives
• Engagement with the contemporary art/design of Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America and/or African Americans, Latinos, or Native Americans is highly desirable
