The Indiana University (IU) School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) seeks an outstanding leader with vision and experience as Executive Associate Dean (EAD) to direct and administer the School on the Indianapolis campus. IU-SLIS offers graduate education, research, and service opportunities in areas related to school, public, academic, and special librarianship. The School’s programs have been continuously accredited by the American Library Association since 1951/52 and are consistently ranked in the top ten library and information science (LIS) programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
The Executive Associate Dean serves as the chief administrative officer for the Indianapolis campus and reports to and works closely with the School’s Dean in Bloomington to develop and manage faculty, programs, and initiatives within the framework of the School’s overall strategic plan. The Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses share curricula and governance procedures, have common tuition rates and admission standards, and have developed a shared web presence. Core responsibilities of the position of EAD include programmatic and faculty leadership, fiscal management, representation of SLIS to the IUPUI administration, oversight of daily operations, class scheduling and teaching assignment, external and alumni relations, and fundraising for the Indianapolis campus.
In Indianapolis, the School has nine full-time resident faculty, numerous adjunct and part-time faculty, and a growing graduate enrollment of approximately 330 students seeking the Master of Library Science degree, a range of dual degree options, or school library media certification. Courses are taught in person; however, a growing roster of classes is offered via two-way audio/video technology and the Internet in order to reach a broader audience of students seeking an LIS education
Formed 40 years ago with the merger of Indiana University and Purdue University's campuses in Indianapolis, IUPUI has grown dramatically and become one of the nation’s largest urban research universities, educating more than 30,000 students. In addition to SLIS, the campus houses professional schools in medicine, dentistry, nursing, law, education, business, and social work and confers more professional degrees than any other campus in Indiana. IUPUI also has schools of health and rehabilitation sciences, art and design, engineering and technology, liberal arts and science. Located in downtown Indianapolis, the state's capital and largest city, IUPUI offers many opportunities for student and faculty interaction and collaboration with state library leaders and an array of school, public, academic, and special libraries.
The successful candidate for this position will have a compelling vision for SLIS-Indianapolis, strong leadership skills, and significant administrative experience. Candidates must have qualifications and achievements in library and information science consistent with a tenured appointment at the full professor or associate professor level in SLIS.
