INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISOR
International Education Center
$3,346-$5,621/Month

Notes: This is a full-time, career position. Schedule of hours is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Overtime, travel and travel outside of normal business hours may be required. Occasional weekend and evening work. Per Department of Homeland Security and Department of State Requirements, individual must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to serve as a Designated School Official/Alternate Responsible Officer. The budgeted monthly starting salary range for this position is $3,346 - $4,104.

Effective September 1, 2009, the University of California, Riverside has implemented a one-year Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan due to the state budget crisis. Under the plan, this position’s work time will be reduced by a specified number of days according to the salary for this position, with a commensurate reduction in pay evenly distributed over a 12-month period. Essential Functions: The International Student Advisor serves as advisor for international students in a fast paced and constantly changing environment. Serves as SEVIS registrar and provides additional professional support in the delivery of all International Education Center programs relating to student mobility and student development.

This position works under the general direction of the Associate Director.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Experience with maintaining simple or moderately complex databases through data entry and data queries.
• Experience with using list serves, newsgroups, and search engines to collect or distribute information.
• Demonstrated skill in exercising patience, diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with students.
• Excellent organizational skills, ability to set and meet goals, prioritize workload, handle multiple interruptions and meet deadlines for multiple projects.
• Skill in making oral and written presentations to an international audience through innovative media formats to provide information, instructions, or explain subjects of interest.
• Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail.
• Skill in organizing tasks, documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
• Skill in creating and editing documents in word processing applications using moderately advanced features.
• Skill in creating spreadsheets and reports using Word, Access, Excel, FileMaker Pro, or other software application.
• Skill in exporting, importing data from or to different software applications or data collection and retrieval.
• Knowledge of current web applications and technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone and in writing with individuals from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work effectively as an individual with minimal supervision and as a part of a team, and or take the initiative for coordination of activities and projects.
• Ability to model accountability for legal and policy requirements and ethical standards.
• Ability to supervise student or volunteer employees as needed.
• Demonstrated ability to comprehend, analyze and apply complex immigration regulations as they relate to international students and SEVIS.
• Demonstrated ability to assess and evaluate interactions from an intercultural perspective, using practices of the field of international education.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Hired applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License; and must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in intercultural communication, student affairs, or a related field.
• Completion of NAFSA foundation workshop: F-1 regulations for beginners.
• Experience with html, database design, desktop publishing and scanning.
• Experience serving as a designated school official for at least one year.
• Experience with FSA-ATLAS or another batch processing system.
• Experience studying or working outside the U.S. in relation to higher education.
• Ability to speak a foreign language.
