SENIOR BILINGUAL WRITER
ANR News & Outreach in Spanish
$3,346-$5,378

Notes: This is a full-time, career position. Schedule of hours is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Overtime, travel and travel outside of normal business hours may be required. The budgeted monthly starting salary range for this position is $3,346 - $3,713.

Essential Functions: Under the general direction of the program manager, News & Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS), the Senior Bilingual Writer will assist in the preparation of a wide range of Spanish-language materials targeting the Latino population and the Spanish-language media.

Provides writing, translation/adaptation, editing, copy editing and proofreading support, applying varying guidelines for format and style in the preparation of materials on topics of interests to Spanish-language media, general audiences, agencies, organizations, as well as other University of California and agriculture and natural resources programs and departments. This position will adapt/translate complex and scientific materials into user-friendly Spanish language for target audiences. Resolves questions of style, content and translation.

The Sr. Writer will research and write/adapt into Spanish news releases, news briefs, feature stories, and public service announcements, and will prepare them to be posted on the Web. In consultation with the program manager, the individual in this position will work with the Spanish-language media, disseminating appropriate information and responding to requests for information.

Work as part of a team of communication professionals to develop and maintain an effective and integrated communications program for internal and external audiences. The individual in this position is expected to contribute ideas about subject matter, content, format, design, graphics, illustrations, etc., for materials and publications, taking into account its cultural sensitivity to the target audience.

Minimum Requirements:
• Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing/advertising or a related field.
• Experience with using current web applications, web-based programs and communications, and technologies and search engines.
• Must be skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint).
• Fluency in Spanish and excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish.
• Skills in reading and understanding complex or semi-scientific documents and ability to adapt them into non-technical language the target audiences can easily understand.
• Demonstrated skill in recognizing and developing news and feature stories and in communicating them effectively (verbally and written, in English and Spanish) in appropriate styles for radio, television, internet and print media.
• Skill in identifying issues to be communicated, the appropriate audience, the method, format and timing of the communication.
• Skill in using professional judgment in addressing issues.
• Demonstrated skills in accuracy and thoroughness.
• Demonstrated knowledge of journalistic formats, styles, standards, deadlines, techniques and audiences.
• Demonstrated writing, editing and proofreading ability, with a strong emphasis in Spanish. An understanding of California's diverse population and sensitivity to its needs and cultural/linguistic differences.
• Ability to monitor own work to ensure quality. A desire to be challenged daily and to work in a fast-paced and highly motivated team environment are essential.
• Ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage priorities effectively.
• Ability to work independently and complete tasks with minimum supervision while achieving maximum results and delivering quality work.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to travel, sometimes with overnight stays required.
• Hired applicant must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice; and possess a valid California Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Intermediate to expert experience in a range of publishing software (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator.)
• Some experience in radio/video production and editing.
• Skills and/or training with exposure to new media, emerging technologies and technologies applications (i.e. blogs, social media sites).
• Broad understanding of Internet and Web-based technology, and a keen sense of trends in multi-media and social media communications.
