Engineering-Deans Office

Notes: This is a full-time, career position. Schedule of hours is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is currently funded by our CCRAA grant through the U.S. Department of Education; its continuation may be contingent upon future funding. The budgeted monthly starting salary range for this position is $3,346 - $4,104.

Effective September 1, 2009, the University of California, Riverside has implemented a one-year Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan due to the state budget crisis. Under the plan, this position’s work time will be reduced by a specified number of days according to the salary for this position, with a commensurate reduction in pay evenly distributed over a 12-month period. Essential Functions: The Student Affairs Officer assists and supports the Professional Development Officer with planning, implementing and assessing programs, events, and services that support the academic and professional development of the students of the Bourns College of Engineering (BCoE). This includes developing and coordinating workshops, conferences, as well as participating in career and recruitment events.

This position works with the Professional Development Officer to develop and sustain activities in support of the professional development of UCR college students, including student professional societies to participate in national events and host events on Campus. Work with College departments, student advising, community colleges, and high schools to increase the number of students transferring into the Engineering fields at UCR and to enhance support more generally for Hispanic and low-income students at UCR who are pursuing degrees in the Engineering fields. Participates in various College-wide and Campus-wide outreach events and work with Outreach Programs on Campus, such as MESA and Upward Bound on these events.

This position works under the general direction of the Professional Development Officer.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in a Science or Engineering field or equivalent combination of college education and experience in a Science or Engineering field.
• Experience with student advising in a higher education institution.
• Experience developing and conducting workshops, seminars, and other group instructional programs.
• Skill in evaluating and analyzing data and information to identify patterns, trends, and relationships, and emulating logical and objective conclusions or recommendations.
• Demonstrating advanced skills in oral and written communication, and public speaking skills. Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly and convincingly. Demonstrated skills to identify issues and communicate them to the correct audience, using appropriate methods.
• Demonstrated skills in MS Office software, including MS Word, Excel, Access, email, as well as Internet browsing. Knowledge and experience in creating spreadsheets, tables, reports, and databases to store and extract information as needed.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally and diplomatically with external constituents, colleagues, faculty, and campus administration.
• Excellent organizational skills, ability to set and meet goals, prioritize workload, handle multiple interruptions, and meet deadlines for multiple projects.
• Demonstrated skills to independently develop ideas and present them in the form of written proposals.
• Knowledge of research and survey techniques with the ability to compile statistical data and develop reports.
• Understanding of the requirements of professional development for the engineering professions.
• Demonstrate ability to effectively establish professional relationships with representatives of premier industrial and governmental organizations, both national and international.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as a part of a team, and or take the initiative for coordination of activities and projects.
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and patient, to use tact and diplomacy to reach desired outcomes, and to recognize sensitive issues that require confidentiality.
• Hired applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License; must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
• A Master’s degree in field related to science or engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
• Experience working with and advising students in the science and/or engineering fields.
• Demonstrated experience and skill in technical communications.
• Understanding of engineering, its disciplines, and its major principles in relation to technical careers in established and emerging industries.
• Thorough understanding of the University, the College, and the major requirements for each degree offered by the College.
